MY journey as a woman in tech before and after

MY journey as a woman in tech before and after

We live in a world where technology has sped up and there's never a dull moment. Technologies and technological change were extremely slow in the past, however, in stark contrast to those days, we live in a time of extraordinarily fast technological change. As it evolves, we have to evolve too or we get left behind.

I used to believe tech was a men’s thing, but not anymore. I first got exposed to programming, coding, and designing at the University. I heard about blockchains and cryptocurrencies, and they were interesting, but not interesting enough to get me to explore them. And then I heard about Non-Fungible Tokens(NFTs) which are really interesting, a combination of blockchain technology and art. Everything was new, challenging and amusing to learn and discover.

The first time I came across NFTs well I thought? Easy peasy. I started to get acquainted and it was like “...what's changing? I thought this thing is easy and fun”. The good thing though is with much learning and practice, I started getting comfortable. That’s how I got introduced to the Web3 world, DeFi and quality testing of software products and applications. I began to test on-chain implementations and functionalities for new projects.

Through my testing, I got introduced to tech communities. They were just the best support system needed. I got to meet new people, network with experienced people that were willing to share resources and discuss ideas, discuss and learn about new trends in the tech ecosystem, find opportunities and much more. Most importantly, I made friends.

Like most women in tech, I have the tendency to be hard on myself. The most common questions are; Where do I start? How do I start? Can I do this? Is this really for me? And they all lead to some self-doubt and the overwhelming want and need for perfection. However, I have since learned that the only constant in technology is change itself, so, in order to stay relevant in tech, there are things I need to do. Some of those things are:

  • I have to keep on learning (learn, learn, and learn some more).

  • I have to stay up to date with current trends.

  • I have to be patient,

  • I must be consistent.

  • I must value progress over perfection.

There are so many roles in tech and for non-technical people, there are lots of tech-adjacent roles as well. For example, after doing lots of research on technical writing, I started technical writing. The journey has been fulfilling and fun and I got access to lots of resources through my communities.

Being intentional about the area, choosing and finding what resonates with you, and focusing are my keys to thriving in the tech world.

So ladies (and gentlemen), get rid of the idea that tech is scary, be confident, believe in yourself, explore many fields and take a chance on yourself because it is the best bet you will ever make! Go out there and thrive!
